How to Make the Most of Online Therapy

Online therapy has revolutionized the way we access mental health support and evidence suggests that it is as effective as in-person therapy. It offers a convenient and flexible solution, allowing you to connect with a therapist from the comfort of your own home. However, what makes onlien therapy accessible can sometimes also hinder your therapeutic progress. To maximize the benefits of online therapy, it's essential to approach it with intention and mindfulness.

Here are four tips to help you make the most of your online therapy sessions:

1. Create a Dedicated Therapy Space

Find a quiet, private space where you can focus on your therapy session without interruptions. This space should be free from distractions and conducive to open and honest communication. Whether it's a cozy corner of your bedroom or a quiet spot in your home office, ensure it's a place where you feel safe and comfortable. If you have little ones at home, if possible please arrange for an adult to be with them so you’re not worried in the back of your mind that they might walk in or overhear you.

Knowing that your space is private and confidential will help you open up and be vulnerable with your therapist.

2. Prioritize a Reliable Connection

A stable internet connection is crucial for a seamless online therapy experience. A strong, reliable connection will minimize technical difficulties and ensure that your sessions flow smoothly. Consider using a wired connection or a high-speed Wi-Fi network to reduce the risk of disruptions. It is essential that you and your therapist can hear and see each other!

3. Invest in Quality Technology

While a smartphone can be used for online therapy, a laptop or desktop computer offers a more optimal experience. A larger screen allows for better eye contact and reduces eye strain. Additionally, using headphones can enhance audio quality and minimize background noise.

4. Set the Stage for Success

To fully engage in your therapy session, it's important to create a mindful space for yourself. Take some time before the session to ground yourself and center your thoughts. This could involve practicing mindfulness techniques, journaling, or simply taking a few deep breaths. After the session, take a moment to reflect on what you've discussed and integrate the insights gained into your daily life. If you’re fitting in your sessions while you’re working, consider going for a short walk before returning to your job.

Taking some time before and after the session will hopefully recreate the separation you traditionally experience when you commute to your therapist’s office.

Remember that therapy is different from chatting to a friend and requires effort and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. I hope that by following these tips, you can set up your online sessions to help you achieve your goals!
